Building Code Calculator App

Case ID:
2023-021

BACKGROUND

Building codes primarily function as standards to ensure safety and wellbeing of the occupants within and around structures, and are required knowledge for most building design profession licenses or registrations. However, as buildings become more complex and known hazards and approaches change, building codes do as well, resulting in a shifting body of regulatory policy. This can create difficulty performing calculations when designing or planning buildings and interior spaces. Additionally, codes are typically organized in a verbal format which makes navigation difficult for many users, and there are dependencies within codes which require cross-checking information to meet standards. Given this complex integrative nature and resultant high cognitive load, there is a clear need for a high-functioning application to assist with building code calculations.

SUMMARY OF TECHNOLOGY

Researchers at OSU have developed software capable of performing building code calculations necessary for building code compliance. The building code calculator (BCC) application is set up to be able to perform a range of calculations pertaining to occupant load, minimum number of required plumbing fixtures, etc. with easily usable menus and functions for specific space functionalities. Additionally, the BCC can function offline and generate a copy of calculation steps, both of which are invaluable to on-site work and report/permitting generation. This represents a marked improvement over methods currently employed by building industry professionals; also, the BCC has the potential as a successful educational tool. Both survey and biometric data from senior interior design student volunteers show that using the BCC reduces stress levels and helped to accomplish the building tasks performed.  The BCC will save time and reduce errors generated from building code calculations done by building and space planning professionals as well as help students in educational settings to master design concepts.
