A parametrically driven CAD file for generating 3D printable customized microscope slide storage boxes

Case ID:
2023-029

BACKGROUND

Traditionally, glass microscope slides are stored in cardboard slide boxes that can be flimsy, expensive, contain an inadequate number of slots, incorrect slide dimensions, and may deteriorate upon contact with prolonged laboratory exposure. The alternative is purchasing plastic microscope slide boxes, which are costly and non-customizable.

SUMMARY OF TECHNOLOGY

OSU researchers have created a customizable CAD file that enables users to 3D print parametric microscope slide boxes. This workflow allows users to customize the number of slides in each box, slide dimensions, and the thickness of the walls for increased transport protection. This novel storage solution helps maximize the efficient use of storage space, as well as provide a customizable solution for long-term archival storage that won’t consume copious laboratory funds.
